Temporary Bridges Update #1

Here we go.

Replacement of Middlebury’s deteriorating Main Street and Merchants Row bridges with temporary spans gets underway with prep work starting Friday, June 2.

During this first phase of construction, which is scheduled to last into the third week of June, I’ll be updating you frequently on project progress and impacts.

First up: Friday morning Kubricky will be drilling a test pit at the entrance to Printers Alley in order to locate the town’s water and sewer force main underneath the roadway. Printers Alley will be closed at 9 AM and reopened later in the afternoon. Some parking on both sides of Main Street will be cordoned off in order to maintain two-way traffic.

Work begins in earnest the week of June 5 with the installation of minipiles underneath Main Street to facilitate construction of the new bridge when it’s installed.

Impact on parking on Main Street the week of June 5 will be significant. Most of the parking from the intersection with Merchants Row to the crosswalk connecting the Post Office and Village Green will be lost as the contractor maintains two-way traffic while occupying first the eastbound lane and then the westbound lane to install the minipiles.
